About Barra Ferry

Lying at the Southerly tip of the Outer Isles, Barra can be reached by ferry from Eriskay. It is probably best known for its golden beaches, sandy grasslands, wild flowers and rugged interior. When you arrive at Castlebay, Barra's main harbour town, you will see the Islands most famous landmark, Kisimul Castle. The castle was built by MacNeil of Barra in the 15th Century and remains in the family today.

Barra holds a number of events during the summer months including Barra Live, an island music festival which take in mid July.

How to get Around
Boat trips to Mingulay, Eriskay and Barra Head can be arranged by Barra Boat Trips. There are also two car hire companies that operate on the island, which are by Peter Brown in Castlebay who will deliver the car to any part of the island and Margaret Macmillan who has a fleet of 15 cars. However, if unable or unwilling to drive then there is a choice from either taxi services that are available from Hatcher's Taxis, who also offer tours, or there are a few different bus routes on the island. These bus services will usually run in conjuction with the ferry services, and more buses run in summer than winter.

However, if wanting to be more environment friendly then you can also hire out bikes from John MacDougall, where it will cost between 5 and 12 pounds for a day, and 35 to 60 pounds to hire the bikes for a week.
