About Pentland Ferries
Pentland Ferries offer a one hour, attractively priced, alternative route to Orkney for your car and family.
Pentland Ferries was launched in the summer of 2001. Pentland Ferries offer daily ferry services between Gills Bay (near John o' Groats) and St Margaret's Hope on South Ronaldsay. It is the shortest and safest car ferry crossing over the Pentland Firth to Orkney.
Pentland Ferries currently has two vessels although only one operates on the route at any time. The ferry Pentalina B, which was originally built for the ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne in 1969, operates in the summer months. It can transport up to 48 cars and 250 passengers in the summer. The MV Claymore operates in the winter months.
As this ferry route, also known as The Short Sea Crossing, takes only about 1 hour, there is no onboard cabin accommodation, however a cafeteria is available for meals and refreshments. The onboard service is good and the staff is friendly and helpfull.
