About Piraeus Ferry

Piraeus (Pireas) has been the port of Athens since ancient times. The modern city, built on top of the ancient city of Piraeus, is a major shipping and financial hub, with ships connecting the capital with Greek islands, the Adriatic sea, Cyprus, Agypt and other countires in Europe and the Middle Orient. Piraeus is to the southwest of Athens, about 10 km from the centre of town, linked to the city by buses and the Athens metro.

The Piraeus port is located at the heart of Piraeus, with many services nearby. Facilities include left-luggage storage, ATMs, banks, bureaux de change, bars, restaurants, taxis etc.

Piraeus's little natural harbors are among its busiest and most touristic areas: Mikrolimano, Passalimani, Zea, Freatida and Hatzikiriakio. Countless seaside tavernas provide delicious seafood washed down with the uniquely Greek drink, ouzo. The fresh smell of the sea and the sounds made by the assortment of caiques, yachts and sailing ships, which are moored next to the tables, complete the enjoyment of the food.

From Piraeus ferry port terminal, there are frequent crossings to ports in the following regions of Greece: Dodecanese islands, Cyclades islands, Peloponnese, Saronic Gulf Islands, Crete island, Samos island, northeastern Aegean Islands and northern Greece.

Ferry Schedules are numerous and ferry crossing services are reduced a bit during the winter months, but regardless this Piraeus is the most popular and busiest ferry port terminal in Greece and among the bussiest in the Mediterranean.

The local port police can provide useful information. Most Shipping lines' offices are situated in the vicinity of the quaysides - the larger lines also provide offices in the city centre.

Hydrofoils are a rapid alternative to the ferries, although services are more costly and not as regular during rough weather. The majority of hydrofoils from Piraeus are operated by Hellas Flying Dolphin.

Companies operating conventional ferries between the Greek islands include: Anek Lines, Blue Star Ferries, Superfast Ferries, Minoan Lines and Hellas Flying Dolphins.

Those with disabilities will find good wheelchair access onboard all ferries operating to the Greek islands, and to international ferry port destinations. However passengers are advised to inform their ferry company of any special needs after making their ferry ticket reservations soon enough before their ferry crossing sailing.
