About Malta Ferry

Malta, officially the Republic of Malta, is a small and densely populated country consisting of an archipelago of five islands in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, including Malta Island, Gozo and Comino, together with two other uninhabited islands Cominetto and Filfla.

Malta has been a member state of the European Union since May 1, 2004 and is currently the smallest European Union country in both population (around 350,000 people) and area. The total area is approximately 316 sq kms (Malta 246 sq km, Gozo 67 sq km, Comino 2.7 sq km). The longest distance in Malta from North West to South East is about 27 km, with 14.5 kms width in an East - West direction. The Islands are only 93 km south of Sicily and 290 km from the northern coast of Africa.

The climate in Malta is generally warm and temperate, making it an ideal holiday destination all year round. Temperatures range between 14C in winter and 32C in summer.

Valletta, the capital was built by Jean de la Valette, French Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, after the epic siege of 1565. It dominates, in one wide sweep, the Island's historic Grand Harbour - one of the finest natural ports in Europe. The harbour's Lascaris Wharf has been enlarged and is being upgraded as a dedicated cruise ship terminal with duty-free facilities.

Within its limited boundaries, the city reflects some of Malta's rich heritage of archaeology, history, architecture, art and culture. Viewing is essential. It's also worth spending some time walking round this beautiful city soaking up the atmosphere at a leisurely pace. A camera would come in handy, particularly for the views on both sides of Valletta from the streets, which are laid out in a grid-like fashion. There are also plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars where you can sit back and relax in the warm Mediterranean sun.

GOZO, or GHAWDEX [Awdesch] as it is locally known lies about 20 minutes away by ferry. Measuring about one third the size of Malta it has a character quite distinct from Malta; it is primarily a fishing and farming community and the countryside is greener and more spectacular. The best beach on Gozo is Ramla Bay with its wide sweep of reddish sand, which is on the north side.

COMINO is a tiny island between Malta and Gozo. It is completely undeveloped except for one hotel, a few farmhouses and a fortification. Its main attraction is Santa Maria Bay, which has superb crystal clear waters, particularly the Blue Lagoon, which makes it very popular with day visitors and yachts.
