About Oran Ferry

The city Oran lies in northwest Algeria, on the Gulf of Oran, situated on the Mediterranean Sea coast. The site of modern Oran has been inhabited since prehistoric times, but the city's founding is generally attributed to Moorish Andalusian traders in the 10th century. It was captured by Spain in 1509 under Cardinal Cisneros. The Spanish fortified the city and held it until 1708 when it was conquered by the Ottomans. Spain took over again in 1732. King Charles IV sold the city to the Turks as its value as trade post had decreased and it was made a provincial capital of the Ottoman Empire. Ottoman rule lasted until 1831, when French troops captured Oran. The French turned Oran into a naval base. During WOII Oran was held by Vichy France until it fell fell to the Allied forces in Nov., 1942. Civil strife ravaged the city in the late 1950s. Nowadays Oran is major port and an commercial centre. Oran also has two universities. Oran can be divided in two parts. In the old part of Oran, with buildings from the Arab, Berber, Ottoman and Spanish periods, you will find the Casbah (next to the Spanish quarter) and an 18th-century Ottoman mosque. The new part was built by the French since 1831. The French quarter is the commercial and governmental center. The busy port of Oran ships natural petroleum and natural gas, and many industrial and other products. It forms the second largest port in Algeria, together with the fishing port of Mers el-Kebir. Oran has excellent connections with other cities in Algeria by rail and road.
